How do I configure my xp desktop to connect to the internet with Ubuntu Linux?

Problem is this.
I installed XP. Okay fine. It works.
I go to install Ubuntu and it doesn’t see a hard drive.
In order for Ubuntu to see the hard drive, I have to enable AHCI mode in BIOS.
Now, XP bluescreens upon boot.
If I install XP AFTER setting it to AHCI mode, would it work? I installed XP before setting it to AHCI mode.

If not, give me some FREE programs. The demos have to work. I tried some but they just show what they do, u cant really partition with them.

What is the best Linux distro for my laptop

I want to put Linux on it, but most distros won’t run because it’s too slow. Also, l want to keep windows xp pro for a dual boot, for now. I have tried Ubuntu, Xubuntu, and Mandriva 2008 One Spring. So far Mandriva is the best, but Mandriva isn’t like other distros I have used and installed before. I don’t really understand Mandriva and how it installs. Could someone explain to me how to install Mandriva or suggest any other better distros for my laptop? Any help would be great, thanks.

If I have Ubuntu installed and then I install XP on another partition will I be able to boot my systems OK?
