How do I Install Ubuntu or Xubuntu onto and old computer?

I have an old virus-ridden computer running windows 98, how do i re-image (or erase, not entirely sure of the terminology) and re-install it with a Linux OS?
I’ve tried it the way the first guy says to do it, it dosent work, it gives me a bunch of errors, they say “end_request: I/O error, dev sr0, 1207326″ and Buffer I/O eroor on device sr0, Logical block 301833″ a lot of variations of those two.
Here are the specs:
20GB hard drive, 64 mb SyncD RAM (not sure what that means, then it says 256 Max RAM. Intel Celeron Processor.
Does Limewire work on Linux Ubuntu? And, if so, would a Windows Virus harm my computer?

I have windows Vista. However, I have a partition with Linux ubuntu on it. I want to download celebrity sex tapes, just for fun! I’m a girl, so obviously I am not going to jack off to them! But I wanna know if I used limewire on ubuntu, and it was a virus made for windows, would it harm my computer, if I was using the Linux OS?
