My Bootloader?
jftsang asked:
I recently installed Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon onto my USB Flash Drive, which was plugged into a computer which ran Windows XP Professional normally. The install worked fine, and I am typing this quesiton on the WinXP OS. However, when I startup, the BIOS complains that it could not find GRUB if I do not have my Flash Drive plugged in. I can start up normally if my USB Flash Drive is plugged in. How can I sort this out?
I acknowledge that I may keep my USB Flash Drive connected, but I still want to remove this in case I lose my USB Flash Drive. I do not intend to be unable to boot should I lose it!

Portable Kubuntu on a usb drive?
blingjug asked:
Hi, i am reasonably new to linux, but i am working on getting my knowledge and experience up.
I work at a computer repair/supply place and so can actually get paid for learning it all.
What i need is a way to get my linux to boot on more than one pc.
I have a 60GB portable hard drive on which i installed Kubuntu 8.04.
the problem is that when booting from annother pc it won’t boot into the gui. i think this is a driver related issue?
- I need it to boot on various pc’s at work (without interferring with the windows installations) and my pc at home.
Is there some way of installing Kubuntu so that it finds out what drivers are needed and uses them each time it boots up?
Or is there a better solution to my problem?

Ubuntu on a 1 gig flash drive vs. 8 gig hard drive?
tacopie asked:
I checked out the instructions at http://www.pendrivelinux.com for installing Ubuntu 7.10 on a pen drive. What’s the difference between the persistent type http://www.pendrivelinux.com/2007/09/28/usb-ubuntu-710-gutsy-gibbon-install/ and the full install on a hard drive(disk) http://www.pendrivelinux.com/2007/11/13/installing-ubuntu-to-a-usb-hard-drive/ ? Is the former the same as a live cd exept on a usb stick plus the ability to save settings and programs? So is the only difference that through the pen drive ubuntu works a little slower than the full installation? For this you only need the pen drive, right? Btw why can’t you do a full installation of ubuntu on a flash drive instead of a hard drive? Thanks alot!

Is there a software sol’n to protecting files on USB drive w/o installing any application?
Airniqueel asked:
I want to protect the files on my USB drive using some kind of software. I am currently using Kubuntu and I need a solution that works on both linux and windows. Basically, I want to be able to encrypt/decrypt files on my USB drive regardless of what OS I am using. In addition, I only have admin access on the linux machine but not the windows machine. From past experience, I am able to connect my USB drive in the windows machine seamlessly. I have heard of truecrypt, but I think it requires admin access. I also don’t want to have to install any application, hence, the software could reside on the USB drive itself and encrypt/decrypt files easily. Does such a solution exist? and how do I go about using it?

How can I boot from external USB HD?
Chaosis13 asked:
I just got an 320GB black Western Digital Passport external USB hard drive. I have a desktop with Windows Vista Ultimate w/o SP1. I have a laptop running the same. When I plugged in my HD to the desktop it didn’t recognize it, but it did on the laptop. I then installed Kubuntu 8.10 on the HD via the laptop. I can now boot from the HD on the laptop, but not the desktop. I then loaded them both and checked the setup or whatever (I pushed F10). Then I saw that I had an option to load from an external USB HD on the laptop, but not the desktop (which is newer).
How can I do something to allow the desktop to boot from the external USB HD?
