Sound in Linux Ubuntu?

Wifi didnt work originally - Fixed
All Movie/Audio Players froze when I tried to play anything - Fixed
Sound and +/- working at this stage (must doesnt light up)
NOW:
Mute button is alight in linux no sound in linux sound in windows?? i am really confused and really annoyed at linux at the moment. Its a great OS if it works! Any Ideas as to why my sound card/settings suddenly wont work?
