I just put Xubuntu on an old computer to see if I like it, what is the best wireless nic to use?

Pilgrim asked:

This is a machine with a modest hard drive and only 262 ram.

I have returned two different cards at this point, one from ‘Best Buy’ whose Geek Squad guy told me it was the right one, and one from a small computer store who also told me it would work.

Obviously linux use isn’t so widespread that techies in places like these are up to speed on it.

Anybody out there have any ideas?

Xubuntu cannot load the graphical desktop. (Xfce or something.) It goes into Text mode?

Sameh asked:

What I did was. I put the hard drive from my old computer into the new one (old one had no CDROM). I disconnected the original HDD from the new one… someone told me it was necessary.

From there I booted the Xubuntu LiveCD and installed Xubuntu, and then spent a pretty 2 hours configuring it.

When I put the HDD back into the old computer, It refuses to boot in graphical mode because of some configuration error.

My old computer meets the system requirements.

Any help?

Shame

Attention House and D: Have you tried to install Vista on a 2 year old computer?

Loyal B asked:

Especially on a system that is supposed to meet the minimum system requirements? I have to also ask if you have ever really used a great open source operating system such as Kubuntu?

xubuntu problem?

Steve asked:

I upgraded an old computer to 256mb of RAM and it has a 633MHz processor. I began installing xubuntu, but got an error when the installing began saying some file is currupted. I used the option to check the CD for defects, and after awhile it gave me the same error. Right now, I’m making a new CD, hoping that it was just an error when I burned the CD. Think I should even bother?
also, if this xubuntu thing doesn’t work out, how fast would XP run on it?
for XP, I’m not so worried about the RAM, I’ve run XP at a tolerable speed on 128mb of RAM. It’s the processor I’m wondering about. My school’s computers are running XP with 800MHz and 256mb of RAM at an OK speed. And if all else fails, I’ll just install damn small linux, that thing would fly on this machine

Well, I redownloaded xubuntu. (a different iso image this time) And got some new error about unable to unpack something

How do I Install Ubuntu or Xubuntu onto and old computer?

Speak asked:

I have an old virus-ridden computer running windows 98, how do i re-image (or erase, not entirely sure of the terminology) and re-install it with a Linux OS?
I’ve tried it the way the first guy says to do it, it dosent work, it gives me a bunch of errors, they say “end_request: I/O error, dev sr0, 1207326″ and Buffer I/O eroor on device sr0, Logical block 301833″ a lot of variations of those two.

Here are the specs:
20GB hard drive, 64 mb SyncD RAM (not sure what that means, then it says 256 Max RAM. Intel Celeron Processor.

Will an old computer work better on the Internet with Xubuntu than Windows?

John C asked:

I work with the Salvation Army and we want to set up some low resource computers that were donated for underprivileged kids.

Currently we have 20 that have between 128Meg and 256Meg of RAM, processors from 333 to 450 MHz, and 4 to 30 GB HDs. We get a lot of these old computers donated and we are wanting to set them up so they can get Internet access and Open Office.
Is it possible to get these low resource computers set up using Xubuntu where they can be useful on the Internet?

I am currently on one of these computers that has Windows 2000 and 333MHz processor and it is like using bad dial-up on my broadband. Will Xubuntu be any better?

Should I switch to Linux?

Samantha asked:

I am currently using an old IBM Thinkpad laptop, the 600x series. I’m currently running XP, but with such an old computer (12G hard drive, 700ishMB RAM) I’ve been thinking about installing Ubuntu or Xubuntu instead. I have an external hard drive that I run extra programs off of and to hold all of my data, and have tried to get rid of everything I don’t need on the laptop to clear as much space as possible, but still no improvement. It was my grandparent’s so I think there is still alot of hidden errors in XP that are causing problems? I have used Ubuntu before and I really liked the interface.

Should I make the choice to switch to Ubuntu or Xbuntu? Would a OS change make a noticible difference in the speed of my computer?

thank you!
