How do you remove one of two copies of Ubuntu?
Ugly Duckling asked:
(Just saying, I’m a complete newbie to all this.) While I was installing Ubuntu, I was partitioning my Hard Drive when my computer died on me. (I was using a bootable disc of the latest copy of Ubuntu) So I booted off the disc again and was partitioning my hard drive, again. Ubuntu is installed and working but when I start up my computer, I have 2 options of Ubuntu to run from. How do I get rid of one?

Changing to ubuntu, want to erase full HDD. How can I keep programs?
Freddy asked:
So I’m interested in installing Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron, to replace XP, on my computer. My HDD is a bit of a mess, and I’ve been wanting to reformat it for some time. I’ve never reformatted anything, or wiped a HDD before, so this is new to me.
I want to keep the majority of the programs I have on this computer, as well as files. I planned on backing the files up on two separate computers, and just moving them back when the installation of Ubuntu is complete. Can this be done with programs as well?
Programs include Photoshop CS2, Excel, Outlook, Word, Powerpoint, Flash 8, and a handful of others. Plus many Open programs that I plan to just reinstall off of the web.
Also, any tips on Ubuntu overall would be appreciated, as I am an Ubuntu Newbie.
Do not post an answer if you do not know anything about Ubuntu, you’re just making yourself look like an idiot.
Ubuntu CAN use programs made for other operating systems. It can also read all the file just fine as well. You just need a supplemental program like Wine.

How do I load Open Office onto Xubuntu?
baaark asked:
First things first, I just downloaded Xubunto onto my laptop, and its cool. I’m trying to download some software for it, so my first one was OpenOffice. I went to the website and downloaded it, and it downloaded as a .tar.gz, or “tar archive” (gzip-compressed).
“OOo_2.3.0_LinuxIntel_install_wJRE_en-US.tar.gz”
The problem is, on my computer when I double click on it, instead of taking me to an install menu, it asks me to extract it. Which is fine, but then if I do, which file in it do I click on to set it up (or is it already set up?)
I don’t know what file extensions mean what yet (obviously), and I haven’t found a good linux website for a complete Newbie like myself., so if someone could tell me about it, I would appreciate it SOOO MUCH

installing linux (ubuntu 8.04) help please?
show me the points asked:
im a newbie in the linux world so bare with me.
i have an hp g60-12ous notebook pc
2.00Gz
AMD Turion X2 Dual Core 64 RM-70
3.00 GB of Ram
nVidia geforce 8200
it has vista home premium as the OS it came with
im trying to install Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy Heron) (amd 64 bit architecture version) via live cd that is made. nothing is wrong with the cd since i was able to install it on a e-machines computer a couple months ago and the cd is FOR SURE is not corrupted or damaged in any way. my problem is that when it finished downloading the kernel and then the ubuntu logo finishes (with the organge bar), i get a message like this:
busybox v1.1.3 (Debian 1:1.1.3-5ubuntu7) Built-in shell (ash)
Enter ‘help’ for a list of built-in commands
(initramfs)
if there is anyone that can provide help such or instructions that can get me out of this problem successfully…not only will you get 11 points immediately, but appreciation will be given. hopefully, i can get some real answers…if your answering this question just for points…you will be reported…this is a serious question for me. thank you for your time and effort. ![]()
p.s.: i’ve already made space for ubuntu on the hard drive so don’t suggest that option thanks
sorry, i made a mistake on the messge i get. instead of the 7…its 12 next to the word “ubuntu”…sorry about that

04.23.08How do you install linux programs in linux?
Some1 asked:
I’ve downloaded some programs “tar.gz” extension. I have kubuntu linux. EXACTLY what do I have to type into the command prompt to make the program install?
My linux won’t recognize my wireless card, so don’t suggest anything that would require an internet connection. I have to download the programs on windows xp, transfer them via flash drive, then install them on linux from the tar.gz files.
but i am a complete newbie and have not the slightest inkling of how to do this.
as i said before, i can’t use the internet install option because linux won’t connect to the internet.
please help!? thanks.
