Any OS that can load nothing but a browser?
just another answerless person asked:
Hi, I want some kind of Operating System like DOS (preferably non-graphical) that can load a browser like Firefox (including graphics). I don’t need any other program installed. The reason I want this is because I want to be able to turn on my computer and just check my mail without having a long list of unnecessary programs starting in the background.
Some people I asked suggested I try one of the Linux Distros; well, I’ve already tried a lot of them (Xubuntu, DSL, VectorLinux, etc) and they load even slower than my Windows XP.
Bear in mind that I only want this as an additional OS to be installed in another partition of my hard drive. By the way, I have a Pentium 4 with 512 ram and a 30gb disk.
Well, I hope you can help me out. Thanks
11.23.08Will an old computer work better on the Internet with Xubuntu than Windows?
John C asked:
I work with the Salvation Army and we want to set up some low resource computers that were donated for underprivileged kids.
Currently we have 20 that have between 128Meg and 256Meg of RAM, processors from 333 to 450 MHz, and 4 to 30 GB HDs. We get a lot of these old computers donated and we are wanting to set them up so they can get Internet access and Open Office.
Is it possible to get these low resource computers set up using Xubuntu where they can be useful on the Internet?
I am currently on one of these computers that has Windows 2000 and 333MHz processor and it is like using bad dial-up on my broadband. Will Xubuntu be any better?

How do I restart Compiz Fusion on Ubuntu Gusty?
the asked:
Cause it tends to crash a lot, even though I think my drivers are up to date.
Shit! I type compiz in terminal and it starts. Talk about ease of use, sincerely.
What are the benefits of SUSE Linux and Ubuntu? Which is better for Linux newbies to start with?
asked:
I’m going to be installing Linux on my PC in the very near future as either a dual boot or a fresh install after I backup my important files. I have read a lot on both SUSE and Ubuntu Linux. Please help me by informing me which is best for Linux newbies. I have read volumes on both, but am having a difficult time deciding which would be the easiest for me to get into since this will be my first Linux OS.

What is a good place for xubuntu/xfce-related software?
Piddles asked:
I have googled a lot, and I know that xubuntu will run apps for gnome etc, but I was wondering if there was a site like xfce-look.org for software?
I have
Xubuntu 8.04(Hardy Heron)
Compiz Window Manager
Emerald Theme Manager
Avant Window Navigator
Google Gadgets(Had screenlets, but GG is better)
I have gone through a lot of programs, currently found the best music player is Songbird, vlc is always my video choice..
Other than that its all basic or just what I find via Synaptic or apt-get(same thing really)
Any recommended tweaks or software? Looking to make my xubuntu experience as good as possible ![]()
Thanks in advance!
Ok, then a place that lists recommended software. Or if you have any recommendations? Just annoying trying things that end up being horrible, and figured I would get quicker answers from linux users here than in forums like linuxquestions.org ![]()
Thanks though, been to softpedia(replaced cnet for most of my needs when i discovered it)

What version of Linux is easiest, friendliest?
Joseph F asked:
With all the distros out there, what version of linux for PCs is the most “user friendly”, “easy to use” for FREE Linux? The reason I say free is because at my old job I installed RedHat Linux with Fedora and played around with it. But it was a CD my company actually paid for and came with support and everything. This is the one I am familiar with.
Suse and Montevista are enterprise class. Some are even “hardened” for telco use. Not what I’m looking for.
Xandos I’ve played with on the famous Asus eee PCs. Very nice, kid friendly but as far as I know only comes with the eee PCs.
For you linux gurus out there which is the easiest to install, navigate, has easy to use desktop? I heard hardy heron from ubuntu is one such version. what about mandrake, debain etc?
I heard there’s a version out there, can’t remember which, which is definitely geek territory. Geek with a lot of time on his hands I might add.
It’s ok if a version blows away windows on my PC. it’s an ancient old laptop and needs new life anyway.
I think I can get Ubuntu as a live CD. Not familiar with the term does that mean I can boot up from the CD w/o touching my original OS? Or does that mean it will go ahead and install itself on my HD and wipe out my original OS (don’t care if this is the case).
