Why is my laptop not recognizing my hard drive?
Rossi asked:
I have an old gateway laptop that when I turn on, the bios displays a message “no operating system found”. When I went into bios information, the hard drive is not visible, it says “no on-board IDE drive”. So, I really want to fully install linux rather than live boot, but I can’t because Xubuntu is asking me which partition to install it to. But, there’s no [artitions in the list due to it not being recognized. What do I do? I already removed the hard drive and checked the connection, everything looks fine.
08.26.08Intrepid Ibex How to mount /dev/sda2? and Get windows to register my D partition?
tempy asked:
Okay so I have a 3 partition system, and for some reason, Windows won’t sense my D partition and Ubuntu won’t register my /dev/sda2. Those 2 partitions are obviously the same one but for some reason Windows won’t pickup on the D partition being there. Also, how do I mount a drive in Ubuntu.
It is an XP/Intrepid laptop, the D drive is formatter to fat32 the windows partition (c) is formatted to NTFS, and IDK what the Ubuntu partition is formatted to. Please Help.
also, if anyone knows why, when I jiggle the window in Intrepid I get lines across my screen for a brief sec. and how I could fix it.

How can I install Ubuntu Linux from the hard drive?
Tom F asked:
Given a 6-year-old laptop. Its CD-ROM doesn’t work and it is not willing to boot from pen drive. (It can read pen drives, of course.)
Is there any solution to install Ubuntu by eg. extracting and running the .iso from the laptop’s hard drive. Or are other softwares needed to do this?
Please explain step by step what and how I should do if there’s a solution to this. (I really hope there is.)
Thanks very much, Al. You’ve given the savviest answer so far. But the big problem is that there is a very shattered win2k OS on the laptop and it doesn’t recognize the network, neither can it log onto the net. And it doesn’t have a floppy disk drive either. I am completely shot with this situation. The good news might be that there are 2 partitions on the HDD. I am now thinking about formatting C: and then installing a hard-drive-installable OS from that I had previously put on drive D:.
Any ideas?

Does a Ubuntu Live CD Need a Hard Drive?
Anish D asked:
I have a friend that has a laptop whose hard drive is fried. I personally use Ubuntu, WIndows XP, and Windows 2000 Professional (yes, I like the old school methods). I told him to use a Ubuntu live CD until he buys the hard drive. I know that a Ubuntu CD does not use the hard drive (read only), but does it need to access the hard drive for any reason, or is the theoretically possible. Thanks in advance.
Thanks guys!

How much hard drive space for ubuntu/linux?
Chris asked:
Before I install ubuntu, I want to know how much space on a partition I should allow. I will mostly use it for media (music, videos, etc.) and the internet, among other things. I also want to install all those graphic-oriented programs like Beryl.
I have 126GB of free space on my laptop’s hard drive. So how much should I devote to it?
Thank you in advance!
