what does “put them on my jump” mean ? And what’s “off the CD” ?
If you are running it from a live CD then everything you download is stored in RAM and its gone when you switch off computer.
If you have already installed Ubuntu then there is no need to do anything yourself, just click on install security updates….
EDIT:
You can still setup dual boot on your laptop, if in xp you have got more than one drive-C,D,E,F..
You can’t install Ubuntu on C because it has xp program files. But for example, you can transfer all the data in F into E drive and then use the F drive to install Ubuntu. Ubuntu will automatically install Grub boot loader so you can switch between xp and Ubuntu.

it doesn’t store the updates, it just updates it, so there’s no way of putting it on the jump, but running linux off a disk is slow, i would suggest installing it on an external harddrive, you should look into that

research on how to make the Live cd Data persistant (the process is to long to list here). the full process can be found in the book Ubuntu Hacks: Tips & Tools for Exploring, Using, and Tuning Linux. Hack #3 starting on page 7
